The Hastrman / Hastrman

Synopsis

In this adaptation of Miloš Urban’s celebrated novel, comes the most invigorating fractured fairy tale of the Hastrman. It is an amazing and thought provoking directing debut of Ondrej Havelka, who is both a renowned Czech jazz singer and actor.
Spanning centuries, myths, and legends The Hastrman reveals the tale of a strange nobleman returning after years abroad to a small Bohemian village in the beginning of 19th century. The nobleman, Baron de Caus, who is fantastically and truly played by a charismatic Karel Dobrý, feels closer to an animal despite looking like a human. He is a Hastrman – a water spirit. Water is his element. He loves it, understands it and communicates with it. He needs water not only to sustain his life, but also to gain superhuman strength and dexterity.
In this romantic, fantastical, yet ironic story, love to the free-spirited Katynka (Zuzana Zmrzlá) brings Hastrman unexpected happiness with an agonizing dilemma: whether to remain a wild creature or to cross the boundaries and get closer to become a human. Vivid and earthy folklore of local villagers brings authenticity to pagan folkways, yet the story ends in present times.
